Khmer Art Overseas:
There are four museums I’ve recently encountered with very small collections of Khmer art and these include the following: The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is an art museum based in Richmond, Virginia, USA, which opened in 1936 and has a collection of nearly 50,000 pieces, of which 3 are Khmer artifacts, the best of which is a fine statue of Uma. Also in the USA is the Allen Memorial Art Museum, Oberlin College in Ohio, founded in 1917, the collection contains over 15,000 works of art and just 1 Khmer artwork. Heading north to Canada, the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia (UBC) campus in Vancouver, British Columbia has a world art collection of over half a million objects, which includes 3 Khmer artifacts. Our 4th museum is the largest museum in Antwerp, Belgium and is the Museum aan de Stroom, which opened in 2011; with over 600,000 objects, it hosts just 1 Khmer sandstone torso in its collection.
